Office Laser Paper Handling and Storage.

Paper is a major contributor to the performance in printers and multifunction printers.  Printer faults caused by paper can be greatly reduced by the correct storage and use to keep paper in the best possible condition.

Reflex Copy Paper

It is best to keep the complete ream in its’ wrapper until needed. This will ensure the paper’s moisture content will stay low, as paper with a high moisture content is more likely to curl, crease or jam in the printer.

The main reason for this curl is high moisture content which when the paper passes through the heater unit, the moisture is rapidly removed.  This can cause the paper to lose its shape causing the paper to curl and even crease.  For example, wet mail from the letterbox will curl and warp when dried in front of a heat source.

Summer humidity or winter storms as well as the use of evaporative air conditioning will all naturally increase the moisture content in the air which will be absorbed into paper. The longer the paper is exposed to these environments the higher the moisture content.  The result is “wet” paper and this paper will have a greater chance of crease or curl occurring once it is printed on.

The best way to counteract these effects is to keep paper in its wax packaging as much as possible.  This packaging is specifically designed to reduce the papers exposure to moisture and thus reduce the effect of paper curl.  It is recommended that paper be stored in a stable environmental temperature, off the ground, as to again reduce the absorption of moisture.

The Paper Won’t Feed - Tips:

  • The paper may be too thick or too thin for a tray – check the specifications as you may be required to use the ‘bypass tray'.
  • The paper may be a high gloss sheet which the printer cannot ‘pick-up’ - make sure it is laser paper not inkjet paper.
  • The ‘pick-up’ rollers may need cleaning or replacement.
  • There may be a paper jam obstructing the paper path.
  • In the cassette the paper guides may not be flush with the paper.
  • Paper tray may be overloaded.
  • There may be a sheet of paper folded over in the tray.

Helpful Hints About Paper Jams:

  • Don't use metal tweezers or other such objects when clearing a paper jam as it can scratch the Teflon coating on heating rollers and the photoconductive material on the drum unit. Also be careful of rings when clearing jams as they too can scratch the drum unit.  This will end up costing money as marks will show up on the print outs.
  • Be aware of the type of paper you are using.  Some types of paper, pre-printed, perferated, hole punched, letterhead and labels, have a smooth slick finish to them. This can cause feed and fusing problems.
  • Be careful when removing paper from the printer. Pull the paper out evenly to ensure it doesn't tear, making sure any relevant release mechanisms are released.
  • Printing labels through a laser printer only once as multiple times can cause problems. The glue can be affected by the heat, causing pieces to peel off in the printer and leave glue residue.
